A turkey breast is a convenient and inexpensive alternative to an entire turkey and a tasty alternative for roast chicken. You can even make a turkey breast instead of a whole turkey for Thanksgiving if you have a small family, or if the entire family likes the white breast meat. That way, you won't be wasting the legs, wings and dark meat the family doesn't prefer. If you need to feed more people, simply purchase more than one turkey breast. You can cook a turkey breast in a cast-iron pan.

Step 1

Add about 3 tbsp. of canola or vegetable oil to the cast-iron pan and heat it on high heat.

Step 2

Dry the turkey breast with paper towels. Sprinkle the seasonings of your choice on the turkey; for example, salt, pepper, thyme and rosemary.

Step 3

Add the turkey breast to the pan, which should sizzle. If it does not, the pan needs to be hotter. Sear both sides of the turkey breast with a golden brown crust.

Step 4

Cover the turkey breast with aluminum foil and put the pan containing the turkey breast into the oven at 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

Step 5

Cook the breast approximately 20 minutes per pound until the meat is 170 degrees Fahrenheit when checked with a meat thermometer.

Step 6

Remove the breast from the oven. Let it rest for about 10 minutes before carving and serving it.

Tips and Warnings

  • A pre-seasoned cast iron pan does not require as much oil. To season a new pan, rub any type of vegetable oil into the pan. Season it every time you clean the pan.

Things You'll Need
