Some energy drinks may cause uncomfortable side effects like nervousness, irritability, muscle cramps, insomnia, migraines and headaches because of their high caffeine content and added ingredients. There are a number of milder, energy boosting alternatives, such as coffee, tea, soda and sleep.

Coffee

An average 8 oz. cup of generic black coffee contains anywhere from 95 to 200 mg of caffeine. According to Harvard Medical School, a few cups of coffee each day may offer a number of health benefits. Studies show that regular coffee drinkers have a lower incidence of type 2 diabetes as compared with those who do not drink coffee. Coffee may also reduce the occurrence of gallstones, and reduce the risk of diseases like Parkinson's disease, liver disease and colon cancer.

Tea

An 8 oz. cup of black tea contains up to 120 mg of caffeine and also has a number of health benefits. Ongoing research by Harvard Medical School suggest that green tea contains plant-based flavonoids which are antioxidants that may reduce risk of cancers of the skin, bladder, breast, esophagus, lungs and colon.

Soda

The average caffeinated 12 oz. soft drink contains between 20 and 60 mg of caffeine. The amount of caffeine in soda varies dramatically with respect to flavor and brand. Citrus flavored sodas typically have more caffeine than well-known colas. While soda may give you a caffeine boost, its incredibly high sugar content is likely to cause a sugar high followed by an inevitable crash.

Sleep

Medical professionals recommend that individuals get at least seven to eight hours of sleep each night. Getting an adequate amount of sleep is the best, sustainable, energy booster. Caffeine is only a temporary fix for sleep deprivation and often leads to a cycle whereby it is difficult to stay awake during the day, but also difficult to go to sleep at night.
