The way foods are grown or raised can affect your health and the environment. Because of this, many people choose organic fruits and vegetables, according to HelpGuide.org. Before choosing organic foods, understand what organic means and which foods should be bought organic.
The Meaning of Organic
Organic refers to the way the foods are grown and processed. Organic products must be grown in soil that is safe, pure and separate from other products. It cannot be sprayed with any synthetic pesticides, bioengineered genes (GMOs), petroleum-based fertilizers or sewage-based fertilizers. If all of these requirements are met, then the food may be labeled and sold as organic.
Benefits of Organic
Given the simple definition of organic, it may seem obvious that this is a healthier and safer way of eating. However, given the added requirements and care, this type of food is generally more expensive, so it may be worth considering the additional benefits of eating organic foods. According to Organic.org, buying organic food promotes a less-toxic environment, and exposure to pesticides may contribute to neurological and behavioral effects as well as effects on the nervous system, an increased risk of cancer and decreased fertility. In addition, some organic produce is often lower in nitrates and higher in antioxidants, making them more healthy and nutritious than nonorganic foods. Organic has also proven to use less energy, is beneficial to soil, water and local habitat, and is safer for those that harvest the food.
What to Buy Organic
A nonprofit organization called the Environmental Working Group analyzed the results of government pesticide testing in the United States and found that certain fruits and vegetables have the highest pesticide levels on average. According to HelpGuide.org, the fruits and vegetables that should be bought organic due to their high pesticide levels when conventionally grown include apples, bell peppers, carrots, celery, cherries, kale, lettuce, nectarines, peaches, pears and strawberries.
Who Should Always Buy Organic
According to a 2004 "Businessweek" article, consumers may pay around 10 to 20 percent --- or even up to 100 percent --- more for organic fruits and vegetables. While research has not shown any profound adverse health effects from consuming low levels of pesticides, most medical professionals recommend organic foods for vulnerable groups such as children and pregnant women. Infant reproductive organs and the brain continue to develop through age 12, and young livers and immune systems are less able to rid bodies of contaminants, so eating organic is more important for children as well as pregnant or breast-feeding women.
