While soccer, baseball and football are all played outdoors, each sport has a specific type of footwear that has been refined over the years to suit the needs of those playing the game. At a young age, you can wear an all-purpose athletic shoe that could work for all three sports, but most athletes have sport-specific shoes that are designed specifically for that game.
Differences in Legality
While you may be able to find a pair of cleats that will work for football, soccer and baseball, you will have to make sure that the shoes are legal for all three sports. Baseball cleats often have metal spikes, which are not allowed in football and only sometimes allowed in soccer. Baseball and football cleats may also have a toe cleat, which are forbidden at all levels of soccer.
Soccer Cleats
Soccer shoes have more cleat patterns than football or baseball shoes, designed to match the surface that you are playing on. Because soccer is a game that relies heavily on your feet, many players choose to have multiple pairs of shoes, including shoes for hard ground, firm ground or soft ground. As the ground gets softer, players use shoes with fewer, longer cleats for better traction and so that mud and grass do not get stuck between the cleats. Many quality soccer cleats are made of a high-quality leather to give the players a better touch on the ball.
Football Cleats
The main difference in football cleats is the type of cuts that are available. High-top cleats that come up over the ankle are available for players who want or need more ankle support, such as linemen. Faster players looking for a lighter shoe often opt for a low-cut shoe that is cut below the ankle. Most other players use a mid-cut shoe that offers a mix of support and maneuverability. Football cleats are commonly available with either molded or detachable cleats.
Baseball Cleats
Baseball shoes often either come with molded, metal or detachable cleats, and players need to check with their league to ensure that the shoes they have are legal for game play. Metal cleats are often preferred because they can pierce hard dirt ground on an infield better than plastic. Like football shoes, baseball cleats are available in high, mid- and low cuts, depending on whether you want a lightweight shoe or one that offers a little more support.
