Men play volleyball with more explosive power and speed, on a net that is set higher than women's volleyball. The game of volleyball requires players to make quick transitions between offense and defense. Players must be ready to defend their court at a moment's notice. The following men's volleyball drills simulate a number of game situations, enabling the players to improve their defensive skills and communication with their teammates.

No Fear

Men can improve their aggressiveness and digging the ball by practicing this drill. The coach stands on a tall box at the middle of the net on the opposite side of the court from where the player's are standing, and continuously hits balls down inside the 10-foot line. The player's need to get under the ball and pass it straight up to the setter.

Touch 10

Set up three hitting lines, two on the sides and one in the middle, and designate one person as the setter. Have two playing defense on the opposite side of the net, and can position themselves anywhere on the court. The coach tosses the ball to the setter and can then set the ball to any of the three hitters. When the ball is hit, the defenders can dig or block the ball. When each defender has touched the ball 10 times, the players switch positions.

Two Person Pit

Two players play defense on one side of the net. The coach starts the drill by tossing, tipping or hitting the ball onto the players' side of the net. The defenders do not know where the ball is going to go. They must be able to get to the ball and make a play, such as passing, setting and hitting the ball. This drill teaches players to communicate to each other and get to the ball from different angles and distances from the net.

Blocking

Blocking enables players to stop an opposing player from hitting the ball onto their side of the net. In this drill, one player stands on the far left side of the net and another player stands on the far right side of the net. The rest of the players form a line in the middle of the court. The coach stands on the other side of the net with a supply of balls. At the sound of the whistle, the first player in line runs to the net and shuffles to the right or left side depending on where the coach has hit the ball, joining one of the blockers. The two blockers then initiate a double block. This drill focuses on proper footwork and blocking technique, making sure the blockers jump at the same time in an attempt to block the ball.
