Protein drinks and shakes are widely used among bodybuilders and have also become very popular among the common workout enthusiast. You can purchase protein powder and other drinks at your local grocery or general store or find more specialized powders at a specialty vitamin and supplements store. Depending upon your goals and budget, it is best to research the type of drink you want before heading to the stores.

Protein Powders

Proteinpowder.net listed the top five protein powder drinks of 2010 based on ingredient quality, protein/amino acid, scientific evidence, side effects, customer reviews and pricing. The No. 1 pick was Myotein by XPI Supplements. The runner-up was Syntha-6 by BSN. MyoFusion by Gaspari Nutrition took third place, while BSN True-Mass by BSN came in fourth. Finally, Optimum 100 percent Casein Protein by Opitmum was the No. 5 pick.

Prepared Protein Drinks

Some companies sell protein drinks in different forms. You can find them sometimes labeled as recovery drinks. These protein drinks are prepackaged and may be more costly than protein powder per serving, but are quick and convenient. Ensure that you thoroughly read the label on ready-made drinks in order to assess the amount of possible unwanted ingredients such as sugar.

Natural Drinks

Low-fat milk and chocolate milk have proven to be more than adequate after-workout protein drinks. Milk contains the proteins needed to fuel post-workout recovery. Milk also has electrolytes, which are lost through sweat and need to be replenished after a hard workout. Whey protein is popular among weightlifters and is often used in many protein powders. However, you can also buy pure whey protein and mix it with fruit in a homemade shake.

Consumption

Your body uses protein in the production of muscles. When you are trying to build your muscles, you may want to boost your protein intake. Heavy weight-lifting creates micro-tears in your muscles, which contributes to the muscle becoming larger through healing. Since this happens after weight-lifting, consuming a protein drink after a workout since protein helps the recovery process.
