A yeast infection is the inflammation of the vagina due to the fungus Candida. Although Candida is typically found within the vagina, a change in the bacteria levels within the vagina can result in an overgrowth of Candida. MayoClinic.com states that as many as three out of four women experience a yeast infection during their lives. The symptoms of a yeast infection are unpleasant and can range in severity. Common symptoms include vaginal itching, irritation, burning sensation, redness, swelling, pain, soreness and vaginal discharge. A few dietary changes can help reduce these symptoms, but your physician should be consulted if symptoms persist.

Yogurt and Kefir

When you have an overgrowth of Candida within your vagina, that means that you do not have enough of the friendly Lactobacillus bacteria. Fortunately, you can get more Lactobacillus through your diet alone. Both yogurt and kefir contain live active probiotic cultures of the Lactobacillus bacteria. Eating yogurt or kefir can help your body restore the missing bacteria. Once you have enough bacteria in your system, it will create an acid that helps to prevent the overgrowth of Candida.

Fruits and Vegetables

Fruits and vegetables provide your body with a wide array of nutrients it needs for healthy function. Vitamin C, in particular, helps your body to fight infections. A yeast infection is no different. Increasing your intake of vitamin C can help keep your immune system strong and aid in the battle against a yeast infection. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, vitamin E is another helpful nutrient to ward off a yeast infection. Vitamin E helps to keep your immune system strong and reduce vaginal inflammation. Bell peppers, broccoli, kiwi, tomatoes, oranges, kale and grapefruit are a few examples of foods that contain high amounts of vitamin C and/or E.

Unsaturated Fats

To reduce your current symptoms of a yeast infection and prevent a yeast infection in your future, you'll want to reduce your saturated fat intake. Saturated fats are found in animal products like meat, eggs, cheese and milk. Instead, you should consume unsaturated fat sources. Many contain vitamin E, which helps to reduce inflammation. You can find healthy unsaturated fats in plant-based products such as olive, flaxseed and sunflower oils; nuts and seeds; and fish.

Herbs

Herbs can go a long way in helping you treat a yeast infection. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, herbs have been used for years to treat disease and strengthen the body. Garlic, cinnamon, oregano and cloves are all beneficial to use during a yeast infection. These specific herbs have anti-fungal properties that can help reduce the Candida overgrowth. Experiment by adding these herbs to your favorite recipes.
