Krav Maga training is especially suitable for police. Police officers may not have the extra time that is needed for advanced martial training, but they are more likely than anyone to be in a situation in which Krav training will be the difference between life and death. Deescalating and taking safe control of a situation as quickly as possible is the ultimate goal of a police officer, and Krav Maga is designed to achieve exactly that.
History
Krav Maga is Hebrew for "contact combat" and is the official close quarter combat method of the Israel Defense Forces. Krav Maga was created by Ima Lichtenfeld in the 1930s and developed in Israel during the 1940s. It was designed for underground liberation armies fighting for the independence of the State of Israel. Krav Maga became the official martial art of the defense forces -- especially the elite police and the Israeli military forces.
Basic Concepts
The basic concepts of Krav Maga involve self-defense techniques and face-to-face combat. From this point of view, the authority must respond with sound, aggressive, unarmed defensive techniques until a transition to a higher force option can be achieved or acquired. Training may include threatening scenarios that require both offensive and defensive techniques.
Police
Krav Maga training teaches police how to maximize the effectiveness of their equipment. For example, police learn how to use their handcuffs efficiently and their sidearm as a cold weapon, when they do not want to or cannot fire. They may be trained in weapon retention, hostage situations, handling domestic violence and dangerous persons situations. Krav Maga police training is intense and aggressive, but also teaches straightforward and controlled techniques.
International Krav Maga Federation
The International Krav Maga Federation training programs are distinctive and highly specific systems. With knowledge gained from around the world, well-trained tactical instructors give police officers the highest level of education and training. Upon completion of Krav Maga training, a police officer should be able to function appropriately under the most stressful conditions, using the most effective techniques and tactics with determination and situation-appropriate aggressiveness.
