By making your own chocolate bars, you can save money and add a personal touch to holiday occasions. Making your own candy bars also enables you to add hard candies, nuts or food coloring to your creation as desired, and is a fun way to spend a weekend day with your family. Melting chocolate is a slow process, so set aside a couple of hours or longer if you want to make a large number of homemade chocolate bars.
Step 1
Fill the bottom of your double boiler with about 1 inch of water and place it on a burner over low heat so that the water becomes moderately hot. Overheating will damage the chocolate, potentially causing clumping and burning.
Step 2
Cut up the chocolate into small pieces and place them into the top of your double boiler. Leave the double boiler uncovered. The smaller the pieces you break the chocolate into, the more quickly it will melt.
Step 3
Stir the chocolate once it appears partially melted. Continue stirring until no lumps remain.
Step 4
Add candy or nuts, if desired. If you want to color white chocolate, only do so with food coloring that is oil-based.
Step 5
Remove the top of the double boiler from the heat and scoop the melted chocolate into molds or onto wax paper.
Step 6
Allow the chocolate to cool and partially harden, and then place the chocolate bars into your refrigerator.
Tips and Warnings
- According to What's Cooking America, dark chocolate melts at a temperature of 115 degrees Fahrenheit while milk and white chocolate melt at 110 degrees Fahrenheit. You can generally pour chocolate without problem at about 90 degrees Fahrenheit. You can make chocolate bars from any type of chocolate, although sweetened milk, dark or white chocolate is recommended.
- Make certain that every item used when making homemade chocolate bars is dry. Chocolate is an oil-based food, and even a single drop of water can cause it to rapidly solidify.
