5 Things You Need to Know About Exercise Programs

1. Get Specific

One of the primary reasons why people abandon an exercise program after a month or two is that they fail to set solid and attainable goals. When starting as exercise program the first thing you should do is decide what you want to achieve in the program. Next, you need to make the goal realistic and specific. An example of a specific and realistic goal is, "I will lose twenty pounds in three months." An unrealistic and non-specific goal would be "I want to look like a supermodel when I've finished the program."

2. Write Them Down

Write goals down on paper and place this list in a place where you can see it every day as a reminder. Studies have shown that if a person writes down specific goals they are much more likely to achieve those goals.

3. Too Much Too Fast

Start an exercise program slowly and gently increase the activity. People have a tendency to start at a pace that far exceeds their physical capabilities. Listen to what your body is saying; if your body starts to hurt during an exercise program, be sure to scale back on the intensity. That old ad slogan of "No pain no gain" is simply not true.

4. Integrate the Exercise Program

The integration of an exercise program into your daily life is paramount to its success. Set aside specific times to exercise on the same days each week. This way the exercise programs becomes a habit and a permanent part of your life.

5. Have a Cookie

Everyone needs a cookie every now and then. Use this need for the exercise program as well. Reward yourself at the end of an exercise week with a treat such as a dessert or a new pair of shoes. Anything that says; "Hey I achieved my goals and I deserve something nice." This way you look forward to exercising because you know there is a reward outside of the obvious physical fitness you gain.
