Quinoa, pronounced KEEN-wah, is a grain-like crop grown for its edible seeds. Quinoa is a complete protein source, containing all nine essential amino acids. A delicious substitute for rice, quinoa is normally cooked by boiling. As an improvement, you can saute other ingredients, such as green onions and bacon, in the wok before briefly toasting and steaming the quinoa.

Step 1

Rinse the quinoa. Quinoa seeds are coated with a bitter substance called saponin that needs to be rinsed off before cooking. Some brands of quinoa are available pre-rinsed.

Step 2

Heat a wok over medium heat. You can test for heating by seeing if a drop of water will sizzle in the wok.

Step 3

Add dry quinoa and other ingredients and toast lightly. Take care not to burn the quinoa. Ingredients such as onions or raw bacon that need to cook a bit longer should be added before the quinoa.

Step 4

Add twice the volume of water or broth as the quinoa and bring to a boil.

Step 5

Cover the wok with a lid and lower heat to a simmer. Bubbles should be rising through the water at a slow rate.

Step 6

Cook for 15 to 20 minutes or until the quinoa has absorbed water and is tender. Cooking times may vary depending on the heat and the added ingredients.

Step 7

Fluff by stirring through the quinoa and serve.
