Having a treadmill at home makes it easier to squeeze in a cardio workout at any time. If you want your treadmill to run smoothly for many years, you must care for it. The treadmill track, or belt, accumulates a lot of dirt, debris and dust from the air and your shoes. You should regularly clean the top of the belt to remove any contaminants or they can collect and build up on the rollers and motor.

Step 1

Turn off your treadmill and unplug it from the wall.

Step 2

Dampen a clean cloth and wring out any excess water.

Step 3

Wipe down the top of the belt and the rails along the side of the treadmill.

Step 4

Rotate the belt by hand to clean the entire track surface.

Step 5

Wipe up any excess water. Allow the belt to completely dry before using the treadmill.

Tips and Warnings

  • Vacuum around and under your treadmill once a week. Once every few months, remove the motor hood cover and vacuum around the motor to remove any dirt and debris.
  • Do not use any solvents or other cleaners on your treadmill track as they can damage the belt. Consult your owner's manual before performing any maintenance on your treadmill.
