Knowing how to read nutrient panels is an important part of weight loss and maintenance. Fat, which is one of three macronutrients, is more calorie-dense than protein and carbohydrates. This places it first in line to be reduced in a weight loss plan. When it comes to finding out the total calories from fat in a product, you need to be aware of serving size and possess basic math skills.

Step 1

Determine how many grams of total fat a serving has. Look for the words "Total Fat" on the nutrient facts panel and the amount will be listed next to it. Commit this number to memory or write it down.

Step 2

Find out the number of servings the product has. Look for the words "Servings per Container" and the number will be listed next to it.

Step 3

Figure the number of calories from fat per serving. Fat contains 9 calories per gram, and carbs and protein contain 4. Multiply your grams of fat per serving by 9 to get your calories. Use 5 g of fat as an example. The equation would be 5 x 9 = 45 calories from fat per serving.

Step 4

Multiply the calories per serving by the number of servings you consume. For example, if you eat a candy bar that has three servings, multiply your calories by three. Use the example of 45 calories from Step 3. The equation would be 45 x 3 = 135 calories.
