Boxers are classified and compete according to weight categories. Except for those in the heaviest weight class, every boxer has an upper weight limit that he cannot exceed. However, many boxers walk around at a significantly higher weight than their classification permits. They then "sweat-out" several pounds of water just before their competition. This is done to gain a size and strength advantage against smaller opponents. To lose weight quickly, a fighter will exercise wearing garments specifically designed to increase perspiration.

Sweat Suit

The boxer's "sweat suit" is a garment made of nylon or vinyl material that consist of a jacket and pair of pants. It is worn by boxers who want to cut weight fast before a fight. The suit holds much of the boxers body heat while he works out, causing him to sweat profusely and lose excess water weight.

Plastic

A less expensive method that boxers sometimes use to cut weight requires a little more than a common lawn trash bag. Small slits are cut into the top and sides for the fighter's head and arms to fit through. Once the bag is put on, the boxer places a jogging suit on top of it.This includes a set of pants and long sleeve top made of a thick insulated fabric. This configuration creates an intense layer of heat under the bag, making the boxer sweat heavily and drop weight.

Accessories

Underneath the sweat suit or plastic bag, a boxer will typically rub a layer of petroleum jelly onto his skin. This stimulates his body's sweat response and increases the amount of water weight he can lose. Vaseline is a commonly used product, along with two others made specifically for fighters called Albolene and Sweet Sweat. These substances help your pores to open and allow you to perspire more freely.

Considerations

A boxer using either of these methods should increase his intake of water while training. The risk of becoming dehydrated increases dramatically when you are attempting to lose weight by sweating. Also, both methods are merely "quick-fixes" and should not be used as a regular way to maintain a given weight. Skillful boxers know that weight maintenance is best achieved through a combination of diet, strength training and exercise.
