Boiling popcorn can add an old-fashioned twist to your popcorn-eating experience. If you are used to popping a bag of popcorn in the microwave and allowing the microwave to do the work, boiling your popcorn can be a unique experience and possibly a first-time experience for younger kids. Whether you find yourself without a microwave or just want to try something new, boiling your popcorn on the stove can help you create new memories with a common snack or movie food.

Step 1

Place a large pot onto your stove's burner.

Step 2

Add 3 tbsp. vegetable oil to the pot.

Step 3

Turn the burner to medium-high heat and heat the vegetable oil to a boil.

Step 4

Place 1 cup popcorn kernels into the pot and set the pot's lid on top.

Step 5

Lift the pot approximately 1 inch above the burner and shake it back and forth. Continuously shake the pot to agitate the kernels and cause them to pop. This may take about 10 minutes. Avoid leaving the pot directly over the heat, as this can cause your popcorn to burn.

Step 6

Remove the pot from the heat. To help determine if the kernels have completely popped, set your pot off to the side and use a spoon to stir the popcorn around to look for kernels that have not popped. Continue to shake the pot over the heat if necessary for an additional one to three minutes.

Step 7

Add salt or butter to the kernels as desired and serve.

Things You'll Need
