Basketball requires quickness, endurance, agility and hand-eye coordination. While your natural talent certainly influences your basketball skills, there is no question that proper guidance and training will improve your basketball performance. One widely used training method in basketball is referred to by the acronym, BEEF, which stands for balance, eyes, elbow and follow-through. BEEF training will help you improve your shooting accuracy.
Balance
Accurate shooting requires that you start with a firm base, which requires balance. Good balance is reinforced by placing your feet approximately shoulder width apart and keeping your knees slightly bent. This lowers your center of gravity and increases your stability. Your body weight should be roughly centered. If shooting with your right had, position your right foot slightly forward from your left. Reverse this stance if you throw with your left hand.
Eyes
Your eyes should be looking toward and focused on the point to which you are throwing the ball. If you are passing the ball, focus your eyes on the player you're passing the ball to. When shooting the ball focus your eyes on the basket and do not shift your gaze to look at any defenders.
Elbows
Be aware of the position of your throwing arm when you are shooting the basketball and remember to keep your elbow tucked in toward your body rather than having it pointed outward. When shooting the ball, your elbow should move straight up as you push the ball away and not swing out to the side.
Follow Through
Do not suddenly stop your throwing motion the instant the basketball leaves your hand. Instead, follow-through by continuing with your throwing motion until your arm is fully extended and your elbow is locked. Your had should also continue to move forward, flexing at the wrist, completing the motion that began as you pushed the ball away.
