Originated by our Italian friends, pizza has become an all-time American favorite food. Whether you opt for gourmet renditions served in restaurants with tablecloths and china or have your local pizza delivery place on speed dial, it is important to know that pizza often comes with a high caloric value. Making pizza at home can decrease the amount of less-nutritious ingredients you consume.
Step 1
Preheat your oven to 400 degrees F.
Step 2
Mix flour, baking powder and 1 tsp. of salt together in a bowl.
Step 3
Add 3/4 cup of water and 1 tbsp. of olive oil into the dough. Stir it gently until a ball forms. The dough should be firm but not stiff. Let the dough rest for five minutes.
Step 4
Sprinkle flour on a clean cutting board or countertop. Place the ball of dough on the floured surface.
Step 5
Knead the dough for three to four minutes. To knead the dough, press down and forward with your palms. Use your fingertips to scoop and fold over the top edge. Repeat this movement to knead the dough.
Step 6
Spray a baking sheet with a light cooking spray or spread 1 tbsp. of olive oil on the baking sheet.
Step 7
Spread the pizza dough onto the baking sheet. Use your fingers to spread the dough. Be careful not to spread the dough too thin and to avoid poking holes in the dough.
Step 8
Brush the edge of the dough lightly with olive oil. This will help it to brown and become crispy.
Step 9
Spread approximately 1 cup of tomato sauce onto the dough. If you prefer a saucier pizza you can add more.
Step 10
Sprinkle salt, pepper and Italian seasoning over the pizza. Italian seasoning contains oregano, basil and rosemary.
Step 11
Spread 2 cups of cheese over the pizza. Add desired toppings such as pepperoni, sausage or chopped vegetables like onions, bell peppers or mushrooms.
Step 12
Cook the pizza for 15 to 25 minutes or until the crust becomes light brown and crispy and the cheese melts.
