Basketball and baseball share a lot more in common than just their round shaped balls. In fact, the two sports require players to have similar skills in several different areas.

Team Sports

Both basketball and baseball are team sports, meaning individuals must have teammates in order to compete in an official game in both sports. Team sports require teammates to play and practice, where individual sports like tennis or golf can be played by individual players alone.

Round Balls

Both baseball and basketball use shperical balls, though they are different sizes, colors and materials. The round balls used in both sports mean that bounces should be easier to read and bounce true or predictable depending on the surface the sport is being played on. Both basketballs and baseballs have seams that are used to put the balls together during the manufacturing process.

Sprinting and Down Time

Sprinting or running fast is a big part of both basketball and baseball. In basketball, sprints or fast bursts of play are mixed in with slower half-court play in addition to timeouts and stoppages for fouls and other violations. In baseball, bursts of sprints are mixed with periods of rest between plays, pitches or innings. Being able to run fast over relatively short distances is advantageous in both sports.

Extended Arm Action

Extended arm action is a key part of both basketball and baseball. In basketball, this elbow extension to straighten the arm is the main component of shooting the basketball and shooting is the way that teams score. In baseball, extending the elbow and straightening the arm is the main action in throwing the ball. Baseball throws occur on every play and many plays feature multiple throws.
