Adverse Reactions to Green Tea Extract

Green tea extract is an herbal supplement that is traditionally used to treat stomach disorders, prevent cavities and lower cholesterol levels. Because green tea extract has not been evaluated by the FDA, you need to use it while under your doctor's supervision. Green tea extract may also be used to increase antioxidant intake to reduce certain forms of cancer and as a mental stimulant, according to Drugs.com. Taking green tea extract may cause adverse reactions, which you need to report to your doctor immediately.

Common Reactions

Taking green tea extract may cause common reactions in some people. Drugs.com states that taking green tea extract may cause an upset stomach, loss of appetite, heartburn, sleeplessness, constipation, diarrhea, nervousness, anxiety, irritably, irregular heartbeats and headaches. If you develop any of these side effects, call your doctor. Some common reactions may cause symptoms similar to allergic reactions. Only a medical doctor can determine the difference between side effects and allergic reactions, which can lead to life-threatening situations.

Caffeine Overdose

Green tea extract contains caffeine, which can cause adverse reactions in some people. If you already consume caffeine on a daily basis in energy drinks or coffee, you may develop an adverse reaction from caffeine overdose. Caffeine is excreted in breast milk and should be used with caution if you're breast-feeding. Common symptoms of a caffeine overdose include stomach pain, confusion, anxiety, restlessness, dehydration, accelerated heart rate, fever, fast breathing, convulsions, frequent urination, headaches, irritability, muscle trembling, nausea, vomiting, ringing in the ears and swelling in the abdomen.

Allergic Reactions

It is possible to have an allergy to caffeine and the proteins found in green tea. In order for you to get an allergy diagnosis, you will need to consult an allergist. A genuine allergy is caused by a hypersensitivity of the immune system to either green tea proteins or caffeine, which causes the body to produce immunoglobulin E antibodies. These antibodies cause mast cells to create histamine, causing inflammation in the body.

Allergy Warning

If you are allergic to one or more substances found in green tea extract, you may develop anaphylaxis, a severe reaction that can affect your entire body. Anaphylaxis can cause death if not treated promptly. Signs and symptoms of this condition include facial swelling, difficulty breathing, increased heart rate, hives and lightheadedness. If you are severely allergic to green tea or caffeine, you will need to avoid consuming any products that contain these substances.
