Although soccer socks for children might look like a traditional tube sock, fit like a tube sock and even smell like a tube sock, soccer socks have enhanced features designed for the game. These features provide the young player with a better fit, better comfort and less chance of drenched, sweaty feet than she'd get wearing a pair of traditional tube socks.

Design

Children's socks meant specifically for soccer often feature extra cushioning in the heel and toe area for additional comfort and a tighter, compression knit in the ankle and arch areas for additional support. They generally have reinforced elastic around the top and can include reinforced elastic around the center of the foot for additional arch support. The socks are at least knee-high but can be longer and folded down at the knee to create a cuff.

Materials

Synthetic materials are the usual choice for children's soccer socks. Socks may consist of acrylic blended with stretchable materials to help the socks fit snugly and retain their shape. The weave throughout the sock is usually loose enough to provide breathability and absorb sweat. Socks can feature mesh inserts in the foot and calf areas for additional breathability, which helps circulate air around the shin pads and inside the shoe.

Sizes

Manufacturers set the sizing of their children's soccer socks, so the sizes can be general or very specific. The most general sizing from manufacturers often include two sizes: youth, or junior, and adult, with no further specifications noted. The wide range covered by such youth or junior sizing is not the best choice for very young children who have feet that are much smaller than an adult's. Specific sizes often include PeeWee, which fit children's shoe sizes 8 to 11; Youth, which fit children's shoe sizs 12 to adult shoe size 4; and Intermediate, which fit children with adult shoe sizes 5 to 9. Older children who wear adult shoe sizes 10 to 13 can go with the adult size soccer socks. The Youth size offered by one manufacturer is not necessarily the same Youth size offered by another.

Buying

Soccer socks for children are available at sports, recreation and soccer-specific retailers. Prices ranged from $3 to $9 per pair at time of publication, depending on the socks' features. Children and adult sizes are generally the same price. Soccer socks for children come in a wide variety of colors to match team uniforms, in solids or with stripes.
