You've probably seen them at the gym. They look like a cross between a stability ball and a balance board. In fact, that's exactly what they are. They're called "Bosu," which stands for "both sides utilized." The two sides consist of a platform and a dome. The dome side resembles a half of a stability ball and the platform side is similar to a balance board.
When the Bosu was invented, the US Ski team was excited. This was exactly the type of product that they needed to train their athletes. However, you need not be a member of the US Ski team to benefit from Bosu training. The dome side of the Bosu is an excellent tool for practicing your edging skills, while the platform side enhances dynamic balance. Also, most skiers say that the Bosu looks like a mogul painted blue. As such, it's a great training tool for bump skiing.
What to Look for
The Bosu comes in two sizes: a gym version and a home version. The home version is a bit smaller, so if your apartment is spatially challenged, this might be a good option. Keep in mind that only the gym version will offer an extended warranty. This is unlikely to be an issue unless many members of your family plan to use the Bosu on a daily basis.
There are a number of Bosu ski fitness videos on the market. Additionally, some websites now let you download videos of individual ski fitness exercises. This is a good option of you do not want to purchase an entire ski conditioning video.
Bosu ski conditioning video should be taught by someone who actually skis. The video should provide concise details as to how a specific Bosu exercise will enhance a specific ski skill. Make sure that the instructor provides safety and alignment cues.
Common Pitfalls
Make sure that the featured exercises are ski fitness exercises, as opposed to stupid human tricks. While some Bosu ski fitness exercises have a direct relationship to skiing, other are more suitable for circus performers. Beware of Bosu ski conditioning videos that advocate muscle isolation exercises. Your muscles never work in isolation when you ski.
Keep in mind that the ski fitness exercises that are featured on Bosu ski conditioning videos will be pretty challenging. If you have never worked out on a Bosu, be sure to purchase and become proficient on a basic Bosu video. If you are buying your own Bosu, many companies offer a Bosu, pump and video package.
