While recreational cyclists often prefer a level terrain, mountain bikers opt for rugged off-road trails and technical courses. As opposed to single-speed BMX bikes, the mountain bike offers a variety of gearing options. The Trek 820 is a signature model of a hardtail mountain bike. Hardtail mountain bikes do not feature the rear shocks of full-suspension models. According to Trek Bikes, the 820 is equipped with a custom steel frame and Shimano shifters. To shift between the gears of your Trek 820, Web Mountain Bike recommends engaging the right-hand shifter.

Step 1

Lift the back tire of your Trek 820 off the ground. Push the pedals forward while pulling back on the right-hand shifter. Repeat the process until the bike chain has been moved to the largest sprocket.

Step 2

Lower yourself onto the Bontrager saddle of the Trek 820. Align your dominant foot over the corresponding pedal. Push the pedal forward while lifting your opposing foot off the ground.

Step 3

Place your nondominant foot over the correlating pedal. Pull the right shifter as your speed increases to move the chain to an adjacent sprocket. Shift the chain to the smallest sprocket when descending a steep hill.

Step 4

Pull the left shifter to move the chain to the smallest chainwheel when climbing a steep hill. Shift the chain to the middle chainwheel when riding on level terrain. Move the chain to the largest chainwheel for increased pedaling efficiency on downhill courses.
