Nutrisystem describes itself as a "no-brainer" meal plan that delivers food to your door for as little as $11 a day. While exercise is encouraged on the meal plan, Nutrisystem says people lose an average of 10 pounds per month with the meal plan alone. Adding exercise may help you achieve your weight-loss goals more quickly, and Nutrisystem offers services to help people who want to lead a more active lifestyle.

How it Works

Nutrisystem offers a three-step plan for weight loss. The first step is to choose the 28-day food plan that's right for you. You can choose from preselected "favorites" or customize a menu to your particular tastes. There are specialty plans designed for men and women over 65 and for vegetarians. Once you've decided on a plan, the next step is to receive the food that's delivered to your door within days. You get breakfast, lunches, dinners and snacks. The third step is to follow the meal planner and add grocery store items to round out the diet plan.

Counseling

Unlimited counseling and support services are included with the Nutrisystem plan. One Nutrisystem counselor says she advises clients to add exercise to the program by starting with 30 minutes of physical activity three times a week, after they've gotten approval from their doctors. If clients hit a plateau in their weight loss and are closely following the Nutrisystem program, they also may be encouraged to add exercise to improve their results. The Nutrisystem website offers exercise advice from certified trainers, along with online workouts and exercise descriptions.

Tracker

In addition to offering an online weight and measurement log, progress tracker and food diary, Nutrisystem has an exercise log to help clients see how many calories they're burning with their physical activities. Clients select the type of exercise they performed and the amount of time they spent on it. The tracker then calculates the number of calories burned. The tracking tool allows clients to chart the calories expended in household chores, such as vacuuming, as well as activities like jogging and dancing.

Goals

The Mayo Clinic says regular physical activity should be part of any effective weight-loss plan. It suggests trying to get at least 150 minutes a week of moderate physical activity or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobics, ideally spread throughout the week. Your body gets its energy by burning the calories you consume through foods. Nutrisystem says you may be able to beat its weight-loss averages by making exercise a regular part of the plan.
