One of the best types of natural supplements for the immune system are botanical adaptogens. Plants that have adaptogenic properties, including licorice root, ashwagandha, suma, ginger, astragalus and schisandra, have long been used by herbal practitioners to strengthen the immune system, according to the Chiropractic Research Organization. Scientists are conducting new research on adaptogenic herbs and often confirming the traditional uses and efficacy of these plants.

The Immune System and Adaptogens

The immune system is an assemblage of tissues, cells, and organs that fend off toxic microbes and other foreign substances. It can become compromised for a number of reasons, such as illness, stress, toxins, pollutants and certain medications, writes Phyllis A. Balch in "Prescription for Nutritional Healing." An adaptogen is broadly defined as a natural substance that increases your ability to withstand stressors. Adaptogens have the facility to manufacture specific cells to aid immunity. Using adaptogenic herbs under a doctor's supervision may enhance your immune system.

Ashwagandha

The ancient Ayurvedic medical system from India recommends herbs called "rasayanas" as overall tonics to reduce stress, increase energy and resist infections and diseases. Ashwagandha, also called winter cherry, is a popular Ayurvedic rasayana. Traditional herbalists use it to treat anemia, depression, exhaustion and fatigue. The Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center reports that ashwagandha showed promise as an anti-tumor, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory treatment in animal research. Standardized extracts of ashwagandha can be bought as encapsulated granules or liquid gel capsules. You should only use ashwagandha under the supervision of a qualified health practitioner.

Licorice Root

Traditional Chinese medicine has favored licorice root, Glycyrrhiza glabra, as a tonic herb for hundreds of years. Another adaptogenic plant, licorice root has anti-inflammatory qualities and helps the body resist bacteria and viruses, explains Balch. This herb is also helpful in cases of allergies, chronic fatigue, fever or depression. Plants for a Future says that licorice root has also been used in Western herbalism as a general herbal tonic to nourish the liver and as an anti-inflammatory treatment for conditions like mouth ulcerations and arthritis. Use licorice root under a doctor's supervision, as large amounts can be toxic. This herb is contraindicated if you have diabetes, cardiac disease, high blood pressure, edema or have had a stroke. Pregnant and nursing women should not take licorice root.

Astragalus

Astragalus root, called Huang Chi, is considered to be one of the 50 basic herbs in the Chinese pharmacopeia. It is an adaptogen known for increasing endurance, fighting fatigue and restoring stamina. It is often employed as a nourishing tonic and immune system stimulant. According to Plants for a Future, research on astragalus root indicates that it helps restore the immunity of cancer patients. Additionally, traditional practitioners use it for kidney disease and to improve memory and cognition. You can purchase dried astragalus root, which is used for making tea, or liquid extracts or capsules. Often, astragalus is an ingredient in Chinese herbal compounds.
