Natural Herbs or Medicines for Restless Legs

Restless leg syndrome, also known as RLS, is characterized by pain or soreness in the legs while sitting or lying down. Getting up and walking around actually helps relieve discomfort. The exact cause is unknown, but it can be related to pregnancy, neuropathy or even iron deficiency. It can also cause insomnia. Some herbal remedies may help alleviate symptoms of RLS. Talk to your health care provider before trying herbs or other natural treatments.

Valerian

Valerian is a flowering herb native to Europe. It is specifically used to treat insomnia, especially when it is related to stress, anxiety and restlessness. It has a natural calming effect on the body, and is sometimes used in combination with herbs such as lemon balm and hops. It can be taken in liquid extract or capsule form. Because of its unpleasant odor and taste, it is usually not taken as an herbal tea. The University of Maryland Medical Center lists the recommended dose as 200 mg three to four times per day. Although it is generally recognized as safe, valerian does have an analgesic effect and should not be taken with other pain relievers or prior to anesthesia. Consult your health care provider before using valerian for RLS.

Kava Kava

Kava kava is a fruit-bearing plant native to the Pacific islands. It is used traditionally in Polynesian ceremonies and medicine. Therapeutically, it is employed to induce sleep and ease anxiety and restlessness, and as a natural analgesic. It is a natural sedative that can produce a feeling of relaxation and contentment. Like valerian, it should not be used with other pain medication, muscle relaxants or anesthesia. Alcohol may enhance its effects. UMMC also warns that long-term use may cause liver damage. Kava kava should be taken prior to bedtime, and only under the direction of a trained medical practitioner.

Passionflower

Passionflower is an herbaceous vine that grows throughout the Americas. It is also generally recognized as safe by the FDA, and has been consumed for centuries for a variety of purported health benefits. It is believed to help relieve anxiety, insomnia, seizures and even hysteria. It is considered a calming herb and is generally taken as an herbal tea. UMMC recommends steeping 1 tsp. of dried herb for 10 minutes and consuming prior to going to bed. Consult your health care provider before trying passionflower for restless legs.

Lavender

Lavender is a prolific flowering herb that has a variety of uses. It can be consumed as a tea or liquid extract or in capsule form. Lavender essential oil is used for conditions such as irregular sleep and restless legs syndrome. Essential oils are obtained through distillation instead of extraction, and contain the plant's essence or active chemical constituents. They should not be consumed orally, but combined with a carrier oil such as safflower or almond oil and used in massage. AltMedicineZone.com also recommends adding a few drops of lavender essential oil to your bath to relieve insomnia and restless legs. Some essential oils may cause allergic reaction when they come in direct contact with skin. Talk to your doctor before trying lavender essential oil.
