Poor quality and improper cooking has given the Brussels sprout a bad reputation. When cooked correctly, such as by steaming, Brussels sprouts can be tender, mild and sweet. Quickly steam Brussels sprouts and toss them with olive oil and garlic for a quick, delicious and healthy side dish for you next meal.
Steaming Brussels Sprouts
Step 1
Clean Brussels sprouts by rinsing briefly and removing any discolored leaves or woody stems.
Step 2
Bring a pot of water with a steaming basket to a boil. Only one inch of water is needed in the pan. The water may be lightly salted.
Step 3
Place Brussels sprouts in steaming basket. Place a top over the pan with an opening on the side. Allowing some steam to escape allows compounds released during cooking to escape as well. These compound include acids that can dull the vibrant green color and bitter sulfur-containing compounds.
Step 4
Cook until Brussels sprouts are fork tender, then remove them from the pot. Cooking times will vary depending on your stove, the maturity and amount of Brussels sprouts. Fork tender means a fork or knife will slide effortlessly in and out of the Brussels sprout.
Step 5
Toss Brussels sprouts with a small amount of olive oil and garlic. Serve and enjoy. Either minced fresh garlic or garlic powder may be used.
