Vertigo causes a sensation that your body is moving or spinning or that the world is spinning around you. Peripheral and benign paroxysmal positional vertigo are caused by a problem in your inner ear. Central vertigo derives from a problem in your brain. Treatment may include medications, physical maneuvers that reposition obstructions in your inner ear and avoiding activities and head positions that trigger or worsen vertigo. Dietary changes may also help manage your symptoms.
Whole Grains
Foods high in salt and added sugars, such as cane sugar and high-fructose corn syrup, may affect fluid levels in your body and worsen vertigo symptoms related to inner ear problems, according to the Vestibular Disorders Association, VDA. Safer alternatives include complex carbohydrate sources such as 100 percent whole grain breads and cereals, brown rice, wild rice, quinoa and herb-seasoned popcorn. When purchasing prepared grain products, check nutrition labels to ensure that whole grains are listed as the main ingredients.
Cold-Water Fish
The oil in cold-water fish contains omega-3 fatty acids, which may help to reduce inflammation -- a potential cause of vertigo. Replacing smoked and processed meats and fish with fresh cold-water fish may help guard against migraines, which is another potential cause. Migraine-sufferers tend to have low levels of magnesium, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Thus, regularly eating magnesium-rich fish, such as halibut, may heighten these benefits. Cold-water fish particularly high in omega-3 fatty acids include mackerel, albacore tuna, herring, lake trout, flounder and salmon.
Fluids
Staying well-hydrated is important for managing vertigo, according to the VDA. Consume water or other hydrating fluids, such as low-fat milk, soy milk, herbal tea and pure juices, throughout each day. Fruits and vegetables, such as berries, tomatoes, melon, cucumbers, carrots, celery and citrus fruits also enhance hydration. Avoid caffeinated beverages, which may worsen your symptoms and flush fluid from your body when consumed in excess. Although people's fluid needs vary, many professionals recommend drinking at least six to eight cups of water per day, or until your urine appears clear or pale yellow. If you exercise intensely and spend time in hot temperatures, increase your fluid intake.
Nuts and Seeds
Nuts and seeds provide rich amounts of heart-healthy, unsaturated fat and magnesium. Flax seeds and walnuts are top plant sources of omega-3 fatty acids. If you're prone to migraines, nuts may trigger your symptoms, according to the VDA. If nuts worsen your symptoms, eat sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds or flax seeds instead. Choose unsalted nuts, seeds and nut butter, such as almond and peanut butter, to prevent fluid imbalances related to high sodium intake.
