Big Train offers a variety of specialty beverages, including coffee, teas and smoothies. One product, the Decaf Spiced Chai Tea, is flavored with a blend of vanilla, black tea, honey and spices. Although the product is available as a hot or iced beverage, the nutrition facts remain the same. One serving of Big Train Decaf Spiced Chai tea is 8 fluid oz. and contains 3 tbsp. of the tea.
Calories and Fat
Each serving of Big Train's Decaf Spiced Chai tea has 140 calories. Approximately 35 of these calories come directly from fat. The total amount of fat is 4 g, which is about 8 percent of the recommended daily value established by the Food and Drug Administration, based on a 2,000 calorie diet. The tea has 3.5 g of saturated fat, which is 18 percent of the daily value (DV). It does not contain any trans fat or cholesterol. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services urges that you limit your consumption of fat and cholesterol to decrease the risk of heart problems, weight gain and other health problems.
Carbohydrates and Protein
This beverage has 26 g of total carbohydrates, which is approximately 9 percent of the DV. The majority of the carbohydrates, or 20 g, come directly from sugar. As of May 2011, the FDA has not established a daily value amount for sugar, but recommends limiting it whenever possible. This beverage does not contain any dietary fiber, but provides 2 g of protein.
Vitamins and Minerals
The amount of sodium in this tea is 90 mg. The sodium daily value limit established by the FDA is 2,400 mg a day, but the American Heart Association recommends a daily sodium intake limit of only 1,500 mg. This means the amount of sodium in this tea is only 4 percent of the FDA's daily value, but approximately 6 percent of the ADA's recommendation. Each serving of this tea provides about 8 percent of the DV of calcium. The beverage does not provide any other vitamins or minerals.
Warning
Just because this tea is a decaffeinated beverage, that doesn't mean it is free of caffeine. In fact, each 8-oz. serving contains approximately 15 mg of caffeine. In addition, some of the ingredients in this product, such as the milk, may trigger an allergic reaction for some individuals. If you have a food allergy or sensitivity, review the ingredients carefully before consuming the beverage. A sudden rash, swelling and difficulty breathing are a few signs of an allergic reaction. If you experience any of these signs, seek medical attention immediately.
