Your triceps are located on the back of your upper arm. This muscle group can be strengthened with bodyweight exercises, weight machines and free weights. If you have been using tricep exercises that require the use of both hands on the equipment at the same time you may find one arm is stronger than the other. You can eliminate this and add variety to your arm workouts by using a dumbbell in each hand for the exercises.

Triceps

The back of your upper arm is known as the triceps. This muscle has three heads to it, which is why it begins with the prefix "tri." You use your triceps when you extend your elbow. You can change the strengthening concentration from one muscle head to another through shifting your hand positions. These hand positions include palms facing up, palms facing down and palms facing in, toward each other.

Kickback

A tricep kickback uses a dumbbell held in your hand. You begin in a standing position with your feet in a split stance. Your right foot is slightly in front of your left and you lean forward to place your right hand on your right thigh. Your left hand holds the dumbbell near your left side with your palm facing your body. Your left elbow is bent and positioned slightly higher than your back. The dumbbell in your left hand extends behind you as you straighten your left arm for the kickback. You can add the hand variations to this exercise by positioning your palm facing behind or toward the front of your body.

Overhead Extension

Your triceps are strengthened when you extend a weight over your head. You can complete this exercise from a standing or seated position. To perform it single handedly, hold one dumbbell in your right hand and straighten your right arm over your head. You have a choice with the hand position and can place your palm facing forward, backward or in, toward your body. Perform the movement by bending your elbow to lower the weight behind your head and then straightening your elbow to return the weight over your head.

Single- Arm

The benefit of using separate weights, such as dumbbells, in each hand is equal triceps usage. When each tricep has to lift the exact same amount of weight, the benefits to your arms will be the same. If you use a barbell held between both hands, your stronger arm may use more effort to move the weight, leaving your weaker arm weaker. The use of a dumbbell requires your weaker arm to lift the same amount of weight as your stronger arm which can help balance muscular differences.
