The stance and swing in baseball are key to an effective offense. As important as hand-eye coordination is, the strength and power of your swing is derived from proper mechanics that help maximize your force and power. The arms are often overrated as a source of power -- although it isn't as visible, the movement in your torso and hips creates a lot of force that can lengthen the distance a hit ball travels. For this reason, it is important that you understand how to use the hips to drive your body through the swing.
Step 1
Step forward into your batting swing. This will help naturally open the hips and make it easier for the hips to start rotating out.
Step 2
Locate the ball's position as it relates to where the ball will cross the plate. To some extent, the rotation of your hips depends on whether the pitch is outside or inside. While outside pitches require less rotation, inside pitches require more rotation to bring the bat around and contact the ball. When you are trying to pull the ball, extra rotation is needed.
Step 3
Push with your back leg to drive the hips around, letting your torso go with it. It is important that you drive the hips open with the back leg rather than trying to pull it open with the front leg -- driving them open will be more effective and increase the power placed into your swing.
