The deck of the snowboard setup is the component that you stand on during high-speed tricks and hairpin turns. According to ABC-of-Snowboarding, the base layer of the snowboarding deck is often constructed from polyethylene. The snowboard deck has a durable wooden core and edges made from lightweight metallic alloys. Protect your snowboard deck with a waxing technique.

Cleaning your Board

The first step of the waxing process involves cleaning any built-up dirt or grime from the base of your snowboard deck. This allows the wax to take hold and prevents scrapes and lacerations from icy terrain. "Transworld Snowboard" magazine recommends cleaning the bottom of your snowboard deck with a soft rag and a specialized base cleaner. To loosen stubborn pieces of dirt, run a heated waxing iron across the base of your snowboard.

Choosing a Wax

Choosing the proper type of wax is crucial to maintaining the deck of your snowboard. Waxes designed for snowboarding are often color-coded to aid in the selection process. Snowboard waxes designed for a hard-packed icy terrain usually have a dark blue or purple color. Waxes made for warm-weather riding conditions are often made with an orange or yellow design. For summertime rides, choose a red snowboard wax.

Applying the Wax

Although snowboard shops often have custom benches for waxing, a flat worktable will work just fine. Flip your snowboard upside down and place it on the work surface. Press your pieces of wax against the underside of the heated waxing iron. Drizzle the wax over the bottom of the snowboard. Use the iron to spread the wax evenly across your snowboard deck. Allow the snowboard wax to dry for around 30 minutes to ensure it cools to room temperature.

Scraping and Brushing

Lower a sharpened wax scraper onto the underside of your snowboard. Apply downward pressure while pulling the scraper across the bottom of the snowboard. Use long fluid strokes to aid in the scraping process. Repeat the technique until the thick layer of wax has been removed. Rub the bottom of the snowboard with a fine haired brush to displace any excess pieces of wax. Polish the underside of your snowboard deck with a soft cotton cloth.
