Baked apples are a sweet, hearty dessert that the whole family can enjoy. Blue cheese is a perfect complement to baked apples, turning them from a dessert to a delectable side dish. Baked apples and blue cheese can be served instead of a salad or as a side to a smoked ham or roasted chicken. They make a gourmet addition to any meal, and are especially appropriate for dinner parties because their unusual appeal will impress your guests.

Step 1

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.

Step 2

Cut the apples in half. Remove the seeds, stem and core. Use a knife to carve out the inside of the apple, leaving 1 inch of apple meat intact against the skin. Discard the middle portion that you carved out.

Step 3

Mix the crumbled blue cheese with the nuts or currants, if you are using them. Stuff each apple evenly until all of the filling is used.

Step 4

Boil the water, wine or apple juice in a saucepan over high heat.

Step 5

Place the stuffed apples in the baking dish and pour the boiling liquid around the apples.

Step 6

Bake the apples, uncovered, for 20 minutes. When the apples are done they will be soft and fork-tender but not mushy.
