Novice snowboarders commonly catch an edge when learning the most basic turning and maneuvering techniques. Riding on the flat sections of the snowboard will often cause one of the sharpened edges to dig into the snow. Continuously shifting your body weight between the sharpened edges of the snowboard will allow you to power through thick deposits of snow. To avoid catching an edge, the angle of your snowboard should correspond with the gradient of the mountain slope, according to the Mechanics of Sports.
Step 1
Place your snowboard horizontally onto the ground as you reach the apex of the mountain slope. Secure your boots into the snowboard bindings. Extend your legs to stand in a stationary position.
Step 2
Rotate your shoulders to turn the snowboard 90 degrees. Point the nose of the snowboard down the mountain slope. Bend your knees to a 45-degree angle as the momentum of the snowboard increases.
Step 3
Lean onto the heel edge to prevent the snowboard from catching in the snow. Turn your shoulders as the snowboard makes a long sweeping turn across the slope. Lean forward quickly to transfer your body weight onto the toe edge of the snowboard.
Step 4
Rotate your shoulders accordingly as the snowboard carves in the opposing direction. Repeat this weight shifting process to avoid catching an edge while linking your turns. Turn your snowboard horizontal with your chest facing forward as you reach the bottom of the slope.
Step 5
Lean back onto the heel edge of the snowboard. Repeat this braking technique until the snowboard slows to a stop.
