While advanced mountain bikers opt for a knobby tire with a tubeless design, BMXers and recreational cyclists alike prefer a tire that features an inflatable tube. Bike pumps come in a variety of designs to meet the needs of cyclists. Certain bike pumps are equipped with a compact construction that can be attached onto the tubular frame of your bike. According to REI, most bike shops utilize a floor pump that has a sturdy base and elongated handle. Floor pumps have the ability to quickly inflate high-capacity tires.
Step 1
Lower the kickstand of your mountain, BMX or recreational bike. Untwist the small rubber caps that cover the air valves of the tubes. Align the head of your bike pump over one of the cylindrical air valves.
Step 2
Lift the handle of the bike pump. Depress the handle of the bike pump to inflate the tube. Repeat the inflation process with your other tube.
Step 3
Examine the sidewall of your bike tire to identify the recommended PSI number. Align a hand-held pressure gauge over the air valves. Push down on the pressure gauge to determine the amount of air your tubes currently hold.
Step 4
Inflate your tires, if necessary, to ensure the internal air pressure corresponds with the recommended PSI. Tighten the rubber caps back over the air valves to prevent the tubes from leaking.
