A coffee-flavored liqueur is typically used as an ingredient in drinks that utilize multiple ingredients or is served alone for sipping in the evening after dinner. Some common ingredients paired with coffee liqueur are Irish cream, rum, vanilla liqueur, vodka or scotch, resulting in drinks with names like Aggravation or Alexander the Great. Store-bought liqueurs can sometimes be pricey, but you can save yourself some money and still enjoy the drink by making your own coffee-flavored liqueur at home.

Step 1

Bring 2 cups water to boil in a heavy, medium-sized saucepan.

Step 2

Add 3 cups sugar and ¾ cup of your favorite instant coffee to the water and stir until both have dissolved.

Step 3

Remove the pot from the heat and set it aside until the mixture has cooled, which should take roughly one hour.

Step 4

Add 2 cups vodka to the coffee mixture and stir it in well.

Step 5

Pour the resulting syrup into a clean jar.

Step 6

Split a vanilla bean down its center with a sharp knife and scrape the seeds into the jar; toss the pod inside, too.

Step 7

Secure the jar and shake the mixture vigorously until everything inside is incorporated.

Step 8

Leave the jar to stand at room temperature for at least three weeks, or up to six weeks if you can wait that long. Remove the vanilla bean before you serve the liqueur.

Tips and Warnings

  • Substitute 4 tbsp. pure vanilla extract if you don't have fresh vanilla beans.
