Nettle, also known as stinging nettle, is a plant often used medicinally. Nettle leaves and stems release a chemical that imparts a stinging sensation when the plant touches skin. The University of Maryland Medical Center explains that these chemicals may reduce pain by inhibiting the inflammatory response. Ground nettle leaves and roots are steeped in hot water to make tea.

Prostate Benefits

Nettle root can be taken in capsule form, or ground into tea. NYU's Langone Medical Center notes that nettle root was studied in several double-blind studies for effectiveness in treating benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH. The study took place in Iran and showed nettle root to be "significantly more effective" than placebo in men with BPH. The root was also more effective than the leaves.

Allergies

Nettle tea may help reduce the severity of seasonal allergies, or hay fever, explains the University of Maryland Medical Center. Nettles may reduce the histamine reaction that occurs when allergens enter the body. For maximum effectiveness, nettle tea should be started daily prior to the allergy season.

Other Benefits

Nettles have been used since medieval times to treat a wide range of health problems. Nettle tea may help improve joint pain and remove excess fluids from the body by acting as a diuretic. Kansas State University also notes that nettles may also enhance the immune system, improve skin and hair conditions, relieve rheumatoid arthritis and for treatment of kidney stones. These benefits have not been proven scientifically, however.

Considerations

If you are considering using nettle tea to treat any condition or illness, speak with your doctor first. This is especially pertinent if you are taking any prescription medications because herbs can interact with medications, even though they are natural. Nettle tea should not be used in place of prescribed medical treatments. Speak with your doctor if you have any questions or concerns regarding the usefulness of nettle tea in your current situation.
