If you've ever seen or participated in a kundalini yoga session, it is obvious the ties the sessions have to the spine and, therefore, the nervous system. Kundalini yoga involves intense movement and manipulations of the spine in an attempt to raise latent energy in the body. You may wonder what effect these movements have on the body's neurological system.

Theory of Kundalini

Developed in India with deep ties to the world of yoga, Kundalini is an ancient theory that a source of energy lies dormant at the root of the spine. People who believe in this theory employ various meditation, breathing and yoga movement techniques in attempt to raise the energy through the spine to the brain. The purpose of these kundalini therapies is to reach enlightenment, according to Intuition.

Neurology

Neurology is the study of the brain and spine, or the nervous system. When there are problems with the nervous system, people can suffer from recurring headache conditions, epilepsy, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, Huntington's and Lou Gehrig's Diseases. Multiple Sclerosis and various tics and tremors of the body are also neurological conditions.

Positive Effects of Kundalini on Nervous System

According to Kundalini yoga instructor Mark Keane, kundalini yoga focuses on rhythmic undulation of the spine in attempt to clear blockages so that kundalini energy can pass up your back without obstruction. Keane says that practicing kundalini yoga can help strengthen the nervous system by keeping spinal fluid running smoothly and increasing flexibility in the spine and back.

Precautions

Sometimes, in attempt to raise kundalini energy by force, practitioners will twist and move their bodies in violent ways. Forcing your body beyond its limits in any form of therapy or exercise can cause injury and should be avoided. Consult your doctor if you have pain from performing kundalini yoga or before beginning any new physical regimen or therapy.
