A dunk is one of the most popular and exciting plays in basketball. Dunking requires the player to jump high enough so that the ball is over the rim and can be slammed through the hoop as he grabs the rim. There are several types and styles of dunks, but many casual players can never reach or complete a dunk on a regulation 10-foot basketball goal. By adjusting or shortening the goal, however, everyone can enjoy a slam dunk moment.

Step 1

Run and take some practice jumps to see how high you can jump. This enables you to judge how close you are to the rim and how far it needs to be adjusted so that you can dunk the ball.

Step 2

Use the adjuster knob on an adjustable goal to lower the height of the rim to a level at which you can dunk. Some styles of adjustable baskets may require a broomstick or other long stick of some sort to perform the adjustment. Finding the right height may take a few adjustments and practice jumps.

Step 3

Run towards the basket before you jump and hold the ball in only one hand if your hands are big enough. According to the website Breakthrough Basketball, it is easier to dunk with a running start because of the momentum you build, and it is easier to dunk with one hand than it is with two hands.

Step 4

Lower the basket even more to work on trick dunks like windmills, two-handed dunks or anything you see on television. To perform harder dunks you must leap even higher above the goal than you do on standard dunks.

Things You'll Need

  • Adjustable goal
  • Broomstick
