Cod liver oil is a supplement that contains high levels of omega-3 fatty acids as well as many other vitamins, such as vitamin A and D. The nutrients found in cod liver oil reduce inflammation in the body. Because asthma is mediated by abnormal inflammation, cod liver oil may be able to help you reduce some of your asthma symptoms. You should not use cod liver oil as a substitute for conventional asthma treatments. Talk to your doctor before taking cod liver oil.

Step 1

Consult with your doctor to make sure that cod liver oil is safe for you to take. Although many people take cod liver oil supplements, cod liver oil contains high amounts of vitamin A and D, which can be dangerous for some people. Your doctor can also tell you if you are taking any medications, such as blood thinners, that may interact with cod liver oil.

Step 2

Take 1 tsp. of cod liver oil or 10 cod liver oil capsules. This is the dose recommended by the Weston A. Price Foundation, which disseminates nutrition research.

Step 3

Take cod liver oil once a week at a maximum. A 2007 article in "Clinical and Experimental Allergy" examined the relationship between cod oil intake and asthma. This study found that people who took cod oil once per month or once a week were less likely to have asthma symptoms than patients who never used cod oil. Daily intake of cod oil, however, increased asthma symptoms.
