A jammed thumb is technically a sprain, or an injured ligament. The ligaments are connective tissue in that hold the joints together. When you push the thumb backward, the tissue can tear. This is a common injury in sports such as wrestling. The treatment is the same regardless of how the thumb damage occurs. If the thumb appears to be misshapen or dislodged, the injury may be more serious. It is best to let a doctor determine the extent of the damage and how to treat it.
Step 1
Fill a bowl with cold water. Immerse the thumb in the water for 20 minutes. This will reduce swelling.
Step 2
Secure the thumb to your hand with cloth tape. Wrap the tape around the palm of your hand, circle the outside of the thumb and pull the tape over the back of the hand. This is similar to the buddy system for jammed fingers, but uses the hand as a split instead of the neighboring finger. Wrap the tape around a few times around to fix it in place.
Step 3
Take an over-the-counter pain reliever if necessary. The swelling and pain should subside in a few days. If it doesn't, see a doctor.
Tips and Warnings
- Even with a jam, you should still be able to move your thumb. It may hurt, but the joint should work. If not, this may not be a sprain. See your doctor if you are unable to move the thumb. A doctor may recommend a split or brace instead of taping the thumb. Soak your thumb in cold water as often as you want to relieve pain.
- Avoid wrestling until your thumb is pain-free for at least a week. Some sprains require surgery to correct the damage.
