A volleyball statistician much watch the game with a keen eye, noting the various types of serves and offensive and defensive reaction. A statistician might be asked to calculate a team's hitting percentage for historical purposes or to compare it against an opposing team. The hitting percentage is arrived at by using three statistics: the number of attacks, or attempts to direct the ball over the net; the number or kills, which are nonreturnable attacks; and the number of errors, which are attacks in which a ball goes out of bounds or does not make it over the net.

Step 1

Keep track of the various hits throughout the game by marking each down as a kill, error or returned. A zero attack also can be tracked. This is when the ball is passed over the net without an intent to score but just to keep it in play.

Step 2

Add all of the attack together to get a total.

Step 3

Subtract the number of errors from the number of kills. Then divide that number by the total attempts or attacks. This will give you a number that you can then turn into a percentage. For instance, if a team had 5 errors, 10 kills and 15 attacks, you would subtract 5 from 10 for a value of 5. Then divide 5 by 15 to get 0.33. Therefore, the hit percentage was 33 percent.

Step 4

Mark down the hit percentage and any other statistics for the team's records.
