Volleyball is a game of skill and athletic ability. However, the most successful volleyball teams have the best chemistry among the players and the ability to efficiently rotate to different positions on the court. Each serve, attack or defensive play results in players rotating so the court is properly covered. Most teams follow a general strategy for rotating positions by dividing the players into front row attackers or blockers, defensive specialists and setters. Having set up in a specific position, each player rotates after the serve to assume the offensive position.

Step 1

Start the game with the setter in the right back position. This position allows the setter to rotate into the middle front or right front after the serve.

Step 2

Position outside hitters in the front right and left positions before each serve. This allows the outside hitters to pass or attack based on the offense.

Step 3

Start with middle blockers in the middle front position. This puts the middle blocker in the position to block the other team's attacks.

Step 4

Start with the libero in the middle back position. The libero is designated as the defensive specialist and rotates throughout the back row.

Step 5

Rotate the outside hitter for a weaker blocker while serving.

Step 6

Rotate a libero, or defensive specialist, when the middle blocker rotates to the back row.

Step 7

Rotate positions clockwise after a side-out. A side-out occurs when a team wins a rally.

Tips and Warnings

  • Rotations can vary slightly based on coaching philosophies or the ability of the players. Advanced teams use a rotation that utilizes the same setter and allows outside hitters to attack from the back row.
