Completing all 26.2 miles of a marathon is a major accomplishment, regardless of whether you run or walk the entire course. Every step of the marathon places a significant amount of stress on your muscles, joints and tendons. As a result, marathon walkers require specific shoes for maximum cushioning and support. But a common question for marathon walkers is the type of shoe that should be worn for training and race day. The technology of running shoes is generally a better choice for marathon walkers as it matches the biomechanics of long distance walking, according to Run the Planet. However, consider your foot type, marathon course terrain and overall fitness level before choosing a walking or running shoe.

Walking Shoes

Casual walkers who are walking the marathon to improve general fitness may benefit from choosing general walking shoes. These casual walkers typically walk about three to five miles at a time during training. Walking shoes are performance footwear designed to withstand the pressures and impact of constant walking. Casual walkers should choose a walking shoe with a reinforced heel to protect from ground impact and find a fit that doesn't give blisters. You can also use the walking shoes for jogging or aerobics. However, as a general rule, most walking shoes are built with inexpensive materials compared with running shoes.

Running Shoes

Walking a marathon requires the same basic mechanics as running a marathon. As a result, most shoe stores and running experts suggest wearing a lightweight running shoe while walking a marathon. Running shoes provide the cushioning and stability necessary to prevent injuries while maximizing your stride. You can also choose from a variety of cushioning systems and designs to match your individual foot type and stride pattern. For example, you can choose a specific shoe for flat feet or high arches.

Race Walking

With the widespread growth of race walking in major marathons as of 2011, including the Los Angeles and Disney marathons, some shoe companies now offers specific race walking shoes. Race walking shoes combine the cushioning and stability features of running shoes with a specific design and flexibility built for walking. This design allows you to easily roll your feet from heel to toe during every stride. Choose a high-quality race walking shoe that feels comfortable on your foot.

Trail

If you are participating in a trail marathon, you will need to choose sport-specific footwear to handle the rugged terrain. You may encounter branches, rocks or other obstacles on the off-road terrain, requiring reinforced footwear. As a result, wear a lightweight hiking boot or trail running shoe for walking a trail marathon. Look for a rugged sole that is reinforced to handle the rocks and branches on the trail.
