When you're trying to hit your goal weight, you may be tempted to try anything to drop the extra pounds. The Apple Cider Vinegar Diet is a fad diet that involves drinking a portion of apple cider vinegar before meals to purportedly curb the appetite and burn fat. Talk to your doctor before trying a fad diet to lose weight.
Directions
The Apple Cider Vinegar Diet has unknown origins, but it may have been originally printed in Dr. D.C. Jarvis' 1950s book, "Folk Medicine." The Apple Cider Vinegar Diet involves no dietary modifications, but the dieter must drink 2 tbsp. of apple cider vinegar before every meal. In some variations of the diet, the vinegar may be diluted in a glass of water. Although the diet may seem harmless, it may cause serious side effects.
Throat and Esophogeal Pain
Because apple cider vinegar is highly acidic, drinking it --- even in small amounts --- may cause throat irritation and esophageal discomfort. Although diluting the vinegar with water may help, consuming it on a regular basis may cause irritation. If you experience throat irritation, drink a glass of water. If the pain persists, consult a doctor.
Prescription Drug Interactions
Apple cider vinegar may cause interactions with prescription drugs like insulin and diuretics. If you are currently taking a prescription or over-the-counter medication, consult your doctor before consuming apple cider vinegar. The vinegar may make the medication ineffective and lower your potassium levels, which may cause hypokalemia, low potassium in the blood. Symptoms of hypokalemia include dizziness, abnormal heartbeat, fatigue and muscle cramps. Consult your doctor immediately if you notice these symptoms after drinking apple cider vinegar.
Ineffective for Weight Loss
The Apple Cider Vinegar Diet is not scientifically proven to burn fat, curb appetite or aid in weight loss. Nutritionists and doctors have not approved nor recommended the diet. To lose weight safely and effectively, focus instead on eating a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins, and exercise regularly.
