A baseball-shaped cake fits the bill for a themed birthday party, Father's Day, watching your favorite baseball team or celebrating the end of the baseball season for your favorite little league player. The simple shape and design of a baseball makes it easy to replicate with cake. A specialty ball-shaped cake pan creates the sphere shape without any carving or shaping the cake manually. The ball pan comes with two halves that you bake individually and stack once they are cooled.
Step 1
Grease both halves of the ball cake pan with a thin layer of shortening. Sprinkle flour into the pan halves and move them around so the flour covers the shortening. This allows the cake halves to pop out of the pan easily.
Step 2
Fill the pan halves as directed in the pan instructions, about 2/3 full. Bake the cake according to the pan instructions. The cake should spring back when you press it gently if it is fully baked.
Step 3
Let the ball cake halves cool for five to 10 minutes in the pan. Hold the serrated knife horizontally against the top of the pan. Trim off any excess cake by cutting with a sawing action level with the top of the pan.
Step 4
Tip the cakes out of the ball pans onto a wire cooling rack. Cool the baseball cake halves completely before decorating.
Step 5
Cut a small section off of the rounded top of one cake half to create a small flat area so it sits well on the cake board. Drop 1 tbsp. of white frosting on the cake board and place the cut side down so the cake stays in place. Spread a layer of icing on top of the cake and place the other half on it, flat sides together to create the spherical ball shape.
Step 6
Spread a thin layer of white icing over the baseball shape so the cake doesn't show through. Use a narrow offset spatula for easier spreading. Get the layer as smooth as possible, but don't worry about minor blemishes as they will be covered with additional icing.
Step 7
Attach a small star icing tip to a pastry bag. Fill the bag with white frosting. Cover the entire ball with small, white frosting stars.
Step 8
Attach a small round icing tip to another pastry bag. Add red icing to the bag. Draw the curved stitching line that appears on baseballs. Make smaller stitching lines along the long curved line to finish the look.
Tips and Warnings
- To create icing stars, hold the star tip just above the cake's surface. Squeeze with steady pressure until the star forms on the cake. Stop the pressure on the pastry bag and pull the tip away from the cake. Continue making icing stars to cover the surface. For a more basic baseball cake, use a regular round cake. Ice it white and draw in the stitching with red icing.
