Coconut oil is a medium-chain saturated fat that New York University suggests can be not only taken internally to promote health and wellness, but can also be applied directly to the skin. This can be especially helpful if you suffer from a dry skin condition, such as psoriasis or eczema.

Properties

Coconut oil is extremely high in fat, almost all of which is comprised of saturated fat. Although other saturated fats are looked down upon in the medical community, coconut oil contains medium-chain saturated fats, which are transformed into energy in the body instead of negatively affecting the tissues of the body. This makes coconut oil not only highly emollient on the skin, but can also help the skin repair itself more readily.

Methods of Application

Coconut oil is solid at room temperature and can be applied directly to the skin as you would apply a salve or ointment. When purchasing coconut oil, it is important to buy organic, expeller-pressed, extra-virgin coconut oil, which will contain the highest amount of nutrients and will not contain unwanted pesticides or herbicides. You can buy this type of coconut oil at any health food store. To apply the coconut oil to dry or damaged skin, scoop 1/4 to 1/2 tsp. of pure coconut oil onto your finger, and massage the oil onto your skin using gentle, circular motions.

Internal Treatment

Many people experience skin benefits from ingesting coconut oil, instead of simply applying it to the skin directly. Eating coconut oil allows the skin to become nourished form the inside out, and can help the skin retain natural oils and moisture. You can take coconut oil directly from a spoon per the recommendations on the coconut oil jar, or you can combine coconut oil with jam or honey and eat it on toast as you would eat butter.

Warnings

Some people who have extremely sensitive skin may experience skin irritation from long-term use of topical coconut oil. If skin irritation occurs, discontinue use of the coconut oil and consult your doctor or dermatologist. Some people who ingest coconut oil can experience gas and abdominal pain. Discontinue ingestion of the coconut oil if these symptoms occur, and contact your doctor for advice.
