What to Eat When You Have Psoriasis?

Psoriasis is a skin condition that causes your skin to develop scaly skin patches that are red underneath the skin. These patches can be uncomfortable and embarrassing when the affected skin is exposed. While the exact cause of psoriasis is unknown, the condition is generally considered to be the result of an inflammatory response in the body. A healthy diet can help to reduce inflammation in the body, which is why eating certain foods can help to control psoriasis symptoms.

Before making changes to your diet, it's important to check with your physician to ensure your new diet will not interfere with any medications you are taking. Your physician also can help you pinpoint any foods that would be best for your unique condition.

Fish

Fish is an example of fats that are good for you. Fatty fish like salmon, albacore tuna, herring, lake trout and sardines have omega-3 fatty acids, which have anti-inflammatory effects on the body. If you have trouble incorporating fish into your diet, you can take a fish oil supplement instead.

Gluten-Free Grains

A 2008 study published in the "Journal of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venerology" found that gluten-containing foods -- like wheat and barley -- may have an inflammatory effect on the skin. The researchers found that patients with psoriasis had an increased level of antibodies in the blood that commonly signal a gluten allergy. If you suspect gluten may trigger inflammation that leads to psoriasis, try eliminating gluten-containing foods in your diet in favor of potatoes, rice, soy, buckwheat, amaranth and quinoa.

Fruits and Vegetables

Fruits and vegetables -- especially the colorful ones -- contain a high level of antioxidants, which are the body's inflammation fighters. Lunching on a healthy salad with spinach, bell peppers, carrots and cucumbers is an antioxidant-packed option while fruits like fresh berries, oranges and apples make a great dessert or snack between meals. Try to incorporate at least two to four servings of fruit and at least five vegetable servings into your daily diet.

Soy Products

Soy is a protein source that contains inflammation-fighting isoflavones. Incorporating one to two servings of soy into your diet each day could help to minimize psoriasis, according to Health.com. Try incorporating foods like edamame, soy milk, soy nuts and tofu into your diet as healthy meal options.
