The idea of a colon cleanse seems to make logical sense. As the colon serves as a waste removal unit for the body, it processes toxins on a daily basis, and it might seem that cleaning the colon is a good way to remove excess waste buildup. However, the Mayo Clinic and the American Cancer Society state that there is no scientific evidence proving the benefit of a colon cleanse, and that the body is naturally capable of processing toxins on its own. Certain alternative medics still tout colon cleansing as able to boost the immune system and ward off disease.
Step 1
Temper your expectations. Many providers of colon cleanses claim that a cleanse can do everything from help you lose weight to dramatically increase your energy. Researchers at the American Cancer Society and the Mayo Clinic report that while there is no evidence supporting these purported benefits, colon cleansing is not necessarily damaging to the body. As with any placebo, if you believe in the positive effects of a colon cleansing, you may achieve some level of results.
Step 2
Take precautions. The Mayo Clinic suggests consulting a conventional medical provider before you go in for your cleanse to make sure you have no health problems or medications that may be incompatible with a colon cleanse.
Step 3
Verify that your cleanser uses disposable equipment. To avoid the risk of infection, only visit colon cleansers that use disposable equipment that has never been used.
Step 4
Follow the instructions of your practitioner. As improper use of equipment can result in slight to severe injuries, listen to the requests of your service provider and follow them.
Step 5
Stay hydrated. A colon cleanse can sap water from your body, so drink water or other fluids to remain hydrated during the process so as to avoid dehydration.
Step 6
Eat a well-balanced diet that includes fiber, and get exercise. If you intend to benefit from the removal of toxins in your body that colon cleansing promises, you can do some of the work yourself by living a healthy lifestyle. By reducing the amount of toxins you put into your body, you lower the amount of cleansing that needs to be done in your colon.
