Fainting, also referred to as syncope, is characterized by a temporary loss of consciousness accompanied by falling down and a loss of muscle control. According to MedlinePlus, fainting is generally nothing to be alarmed about; however, it can be a sign of an underlying health problem. If you experience frequent fainting spells, see your doctor for an evaluation. Herbs that help increase the blood flow to the brain may help reduce the frequency of fainting. Talk with your doctor before using herbs to treat this or any other health condition.

Causes

Fainting is caused when the oxygen to your brain is compromised. According to FamilyDoctor.org, fainting is common among people with diabetes as well as the elderly. Hyperventilating, high blood pressure medications, standing up too fast and getting upset can all lead to fainting. In addition, working or playing sports in the heat can also cause fainting to occur.

Bilberry

Bilberry, a relative of the blueberry and native to Northern Europe, contains antioxidant properties that help protect the body from free radicals. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, taking 80 mg up to three times per day will help promote good circulation. Better circulation may help reduce the frequency of fainting spells. However, UMMC warns that excessive amounts of bilberry may lead to weight loss and muscle spasms. Bilberry should not be taken in conjunction with diabetic medications or blood-thinning medications.

Ginkbo Biloba

Ginkgo has been used for many years to treat circulatory disorders and as a memory enhancer. Ginkgo also contains antioxidant properties that help scavenge free radicals from the body. In addition, ginkgo may help increase and improve blood circulation to the brain. UMMC suggests taking 40 to 80 mg of ginkgo standardized extract up to three times per day. Ginkgo should not be used if you are taking medications such as anticonvulsants, antidepressants, or blood-thinning or blood pressure medications.

Warnings

Constant fainting spells may be an indicator of a serious health condition. If fainting spells persist, let your doctor know as soon as possible. Women who may be nursing or pregnant should not use herbs to treat any type of health condition without speaking to a doctor first. If you administer herbs to a child, the recommended dosage is one-third of the adult dosage; however, speak to your child's pediatrician to determine the proper dosage for symptoms.
