As novice skaters you can utilize a few basic training exercises to better your balance on the board. Working on getting good balance will allow you to feel comfortable when attempting new skate trick variations. To increase the stability of the skateboard deck, tighten the kingpins found in the center of the trucks. The skate pros at the Berrics training facility recommend riding with your feet about shoulder-width apart to maintain a balanced stance. Practice in a stationary position before taking to the streets.
Step 1
Carry your skateboard out to the sidewalk. Align the rear wheels of the board into a crack in the sidewalk. Place your lead foot over the four bolts located near the front end of the skateboard.
Step 2
Align your back foot over the four bolts located near the tail of the board. Bend your knees at a 45 degree angle to lower your center of gravity. Extend your arms until they sit parallel with the pavement.
Step 3
Shift your body weight between your heels and toes to test the tightness of the skateboard truck. Tighten the trucks if you have trouble balancing in a stationary position. Lean forward onto the nose of the skateboard to balance on the front two wheels.
Step 4
Lean back onto the tail of the skateboard to balance on the rear wheels. Repeat these training exercises to better your board control. Carry your skateboard onto a level street that features a smoothly paved terrain.
Step 5
Place your lead foot onto the front end of the skateboard. Push off the pavement with your back foot to create forward momentum. Bend your knees to maintain a crouched riding stance.
